Healthy Hearts program reaches out to area first responders

In June 2009, Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare and Midwest Heart Specialists launched the Healthy Hearts for Police & Firefighters program, offering heart scans to area first responders.

In the first six months of the program, almost 700 police officers and firefighters from 32 area departments took advantage of the opportunity to identify the risk of experiencing a potentially fatal heart attack early — while there is still time to improve heart health.

Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare and Midwest Heart Specialists will continue to reach out to area police officers and firefighters in 2010, offering the program to additional select departments.

On Sept. 26, more than 240 Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare employees, physicians, volunteers and community partners rallied together by forming teams to participate in the American Heart Association's Metro Chicago Start! Heart Walk.

Teams raised more than $11,000 for heart-related research while educating friends, family and community members about the life-saving benefits of preventive health screenings, such as heart scans.

During just one morning, Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare performed more than 400 preventive screenings on 200 people who took advantage of this unique opportunity to learn about and be screened for common health issues.

The Power of Prevention screening event on May 31 empowered people to learn about the health screenings and lifestyle adjustments that could save their lives. Physicians and inspiring patients hosted informal discussions on heart health, diabetes and the importance of vitamin D, while healthcare professionals performed a variety of screenings including those for cholesterol, blood pressure, body composition, diabetes and vitamin D.
